Queen of the drizzle cake at the T20 game against the Swans last season
It's not been a great start to the year for us. First Dennis Mustchin, one of our VPs and former players, passes away and now we learn that one of our most loyal supporters, Maureen Gibbons, has passed on after a long fight with leukaemia.
To be honest, I had no idea of Maureen's real name and had to ask her shy and retiring daughter, Tracey. Everyone just knew her as "Grandma" or "Gran" or "the maker of the lemon drizzle cake". In fact Grandma Drizzle won actual awards for her cakes. Like Nanny Jean who is Callum Wyatt's biggest fan, Grandma D attended most matches that her grandsons, Jack and Toby, featured in. Last season, Jack mainly took a rest from cricket but Toby marched on into the 1st XI and also played in numerous colts games. His loyal female army was there to see most matches whilst his dad marshalled the 2nd XI.
Grandma Maureen was the type of matriarch who could strike people down with a steely look and had a wonderful turn of phrase when the lads around the club became overly boisterous. This also extended to wise cracking committee members. She didn't believe in great oratory, just one or two choice words could leave you in no doubt as to what she thought about any situation.
The Club would like to extend its best wishes to Tracey and the rest of the Glovers and I'm sure Grandma D's upstairs right now sortng them all out and of course, baking yet more drizzle cakes.
