Weekend Fixtures

Two big scores for us this weekend - more than 700 runs in two batting performances - but ultimately the opposition didn't go for the runs meaning draws were the result.

Saturday 4th September - 1st XI DREW at Horsham against their 3rds. WC&T 405-8 (Morrish 144, W.Chambers 89; 45 overs) HORS 187-3.  Scorecard. Once we'd got past 350 runs with Grant Morrish's quickfire hundred and Will Chambers's sixth half century of the season, a draw was always the most likely outcome in an 82 over game against a club to whom we'd always lost.  As we got closer to 400, thoughts of a Club record score were raised but in the event, we fell eight short of the 2nd XI's total in the thrashing of Pulborough 3rds in 2007Llewellyn & Brian Chambers making the big scores that day.  Sham batted sensibly in reply but were never going to get them;  they finished well short but with plenty of wickets in hand.  Their U14's Sussex player Ben Shoare making a half century.  So at least we've broken our runs of defeats at last!

2010 1st XI: Pld 17, Won 7, Drew 8, Lost 2, Aban/Canc 3
(2009 1st XI: Pld 16, Won 10, Drew 2, Lost 4, Aban/Canc 4)

The 2nds last game - a friendly at Graffham & Smithbrook - was cancelled.

2010 2nd XI (Higher division): Pld 14, Won 5, Drew 2, Lost 7, Aban/Canc 4
(
2009 2nd XI: Pld 16, Won 11, Drew 3, Lost 2, Aban/Canc 4)

Sunday 5th September - The Sunday side DREW in a timed game at Beeding & BramberWC&T 303-5 (Armstrong 102*, T.Chambers 76, Wyatt 54), B&B 114-8 (Armstrong 2-0, Tolson 2-20, Gee 2-33).  ScorecardWe made big runs in Upper Beeding as the Sunday side got their highest score of the season.  Mick's first ton of the season postponed the declaration which would have given us sufficient time to bowl a dogged B&B side out but a welcome return from injury from Thomas Chambers as he and Wyatt put on a ton after we were 1-2 with both openers back in the hutch.  Goring & Armstrong also put on a century stand for the fourth wicket.  After three overs from Tolson and Hasler before a good tea, we set about them afterwards.  Their fourth wicket pair held us up to such an extent that we still needed seven wickets as we entered the last twenty overs.  However the introduction of the overseas player plus some nagging line and length from our bar manager ensured we kept taking wickets afer that.  With six players under 18, the team was a great advert for the colts section so well played all.  A trip to Ditchling follows next week - again a 13:00 start.

Prior to the weekend, there were two exhibition matches we were involved in...

Johnny Foreigners 2010
Victorious Johnny Foreigners on Bank Holiday Monday

Monday 30th August - England (led by Walter Eeyore ChalonerLOST to the Rest of the World (led by Michael Dundee Armstrong) by five runs.  ROW 188-9, ENG 183 a/o. Good fightback from the foreigners after the home side were well ahead at half way chasing in a 25 over a side game.  The visitors batted first with Will Chambers and Shaun Tavares's cousin (whose name I forget at this stage), retiring and then coming back in before both quickly perished to the evergreen Chaloner.  Tom Chambers made his comeback from injury and opened with his big brother.  The star of the ROW innings however was Jack "A Rod" Glover who got his games mixed up as he was representing the 250 million people of the USA.  Jack came out dressed as a baseballer and with baseball bat in hand, smashed a four off his little brother to huge applause.  Eventually the twelve men were 188 all out in the 24th over.

In reply, of the thirteen Englishmen, only Grant Boom Boom Ringer Morrish retired as others struggled to hit the boundaries.  In the penultimate over, Toby Glover and Jake Hodgson both perished before Ben Hasler hit a four and a six.  Two fours off the first three balls of Mick's last over from the English captain Chaloner gave them hope but after two singles, he needed a six off the last ball and was clean bowled.

A full report and scorecard to come from Mick.  For the record, the support crew were: DJ: Scotty Pulling; Sous Chef: Stuey Miller; Scorer: Grand Oiseau; Cheerful Barmaid: Jim.  For many more great pictures mostly taken by the Misses Eloise Hodgson and Georgia Adams on a great day where there was a big crowd to witness events, have a look on the West Chiltington Group Page on Facebook.

We hope our overseas player had a good day.  He's brought so much to the club over the past two years not least an amazing amount of players (even if some of them are registered with other clubs!)

England 2010Posh English types who lost a tight match

Tuesday 31st August - Not satisfied with two games in a row (and in JT's case three), three Green & Gold musketeers - Matt Goring, Tolson and Ben Hasler - then all played the following day in a Northern Knights Area Development XI (featuring players from WC&T, Capel in Slurrey, Pulborough and Steyning) who WON against Weybridge Vandals at Pulborough CC where of course we need an armed escort and visas to enter the fray.  NK 233-5 (Hasler 14*, Goring 8), WV 163 a/o (Tolson 2-9, Hasler 2-30, Goring 1-29) Scorecard & report from coach PG   All three had a good game - each taking a good catch apparently.  They all bowled well too - particularly JT again - as our three took half the Vandals wickets between them; "Little Bird" & "China" also batted effectively as we know they can.  Peter Garland [Boro] who organised the game said they were a great credit to West Chilt & Thakeham so well done lads.  Tom Nairn (Thakeham resident and P**o player) captained the side and made 83.
