Weekend Adult Games

Sat 28th August - the last weekend of the league season.

The captain admires Reevers outfit as
they hit Steyning with safety secured

The real drama for us was in Invitation Division 7 where the 2nd XI, having already WON on the Tuesday night when Littlehampton conceded, needed promoted Belgrave Adelaide to avoid defeat at St Andrews 2nds to send the Burgess Hill side down.  St Andrews batted first and made 175.  In reply, the visitors were struggling at 60 odd for 6 but the seventh wicket pair hung on for some considerable time and we were safe!  Cue mass celebrations in the Star in Steyning when Butch Cassidy Glover and the Sundance Kid Reevers had been holed out awaiting the news.

Toby Glover 2010Toby goes past 1,000 runs in
his first 1st XI league game

So it will be as you were in 2011 as the 1st XI already knew they were going nowhere when they visited bottom club  Southwick 2nds in a game with nothing on it.  WC&T 247, SOU 64 a/o.  ScorecardSo a satisfying thumping to end another frustrating season for the 1sts.  We finished 3rd again or 4th depending on Broadbridge Heath's result.  The only real loser was Scott Pulling who was run out without facing a ball to dent his average.

Toby Glover took a wicket and made enough runs to pass 1,000 runs for the club - Will Chambers, Matt Goring, Callum Wyatt, Ben Hasler and Jonathan Denton have also achieved this landmark this season.  Mick Armstrong and David Hardisty passed 2,000 runs but of course, still way out in front, is the genial Welshman Rob Llewellyn who just keeps on going.  Another 1,000 runs puts him past 12,000 for the merged club.  Incidentally, St Andrews got over their relegation to Division 8 with their 1sts joining Worthing Chippingdale in Division 2.  Partridge Green and Southwick 2nds who were both relegated some weeks ago dropped into Division 4.

Stephen HodgsonHodgson's 32 runs and three wickets were in vain on Sunday at Henfield

Sun 29th August - Sunday XI LOST in our first ever [timed] friendly game at Henfield.  WC&T 162-7 (B.Hasler 38, S.Hodgson 32), HEN 164-7 (S.Hodgson 3-29, Tolson 2-27).  A great match ebbed and flowed on the Common and any result looked to be in severe doubt when we took an early tea at 4:15 with the rain lashing down.  We chose to bat first and lots of people got starts but didn't go on till Stephen Hodgson and Ben Hasler starting slapping sixes and fours putting on 58 for the sixth wicket.  When our innings finished, we still looked to be thirty to fifty runs or so short of a competitive score.  However opening bowlers Tolson and Ben Hasler then got us off to a terrific start bowling a tight line and length and grabbing three good wickets.  Stephen Hodgson and Aftanas took over with Mr H claiming three scalps and Pav unlucky with an LBW shout off their ultimate matchwinner and also bowling one of their colts off a no ball [height].  Jake Hodgson, Matt Goring and Stu Miller also tried before the openers returned in vain to try and finish the job.  In short, it was one of the best Sunday games I have been involved in and we were all shattered having had them 84-7 and the runs rate climbing.  Our fielding was tight aided by a great deal of yoof in the side.  Ultimately though a Henfield 1st XI player who opens their bowling and bats quite high up for them in County Div Three (West) was their match winner.  Henfield are already booked in for the same weekend at the Rec in 2011.  Next week, it's Beeding and Bramber as we start the last month of games.

Under 11's SJCF

23rd August - Winning DRAW at home to Midhurst.  WC&T 191-2 (Miller 91*, Cope 41), MID 109-6 (Lee 2-12). ScorecardFresh from a good performance at the eight-a-side tournament at Worthing on Saturday, the boys went into our last cricket week boosted by the return of their captain, Eddie Miller.  However it was a very disappointing start against a weak Midhurst side at the Rec.  We lost the toss, were asked to bat and racked up the expected large total with the captain sacrificing a second colt's ton of the week to give ourselves a chance of bowling them out.  However from ball one, it was clear the town boys were never going to go for it and they blocked out.  We took six wickets but were left frustrated.  Credit to all especially George Lee who took a brace.

24th AugustWON at Eastergate. EAST 137-4 (32 overs), WC&T 138-5 (Miller 69, Cope 41; 32.3 overs).  ScorecardWe won more comfortably than the highlights above suggest as we were just one down when the scores were tied.  Patrick & Eddie putting on another large opening stand.  Patrick likes the score 41!  We then proceded to lose four wickets for no runs!  No matter, we won and now head into today's crunch game with Worthing joint top with them.  In the other games, Worthing beat Midhurst comfortably and Bognor beat Chi.

Patrick joins Ben Hasler on both Under 11's board below whilst Eddie has 160 runs from the two festival games so far.

25th August CANCELLED vs Worthing.  Persistent rain in Sussex meant no play was possible at the Rec.

26th AugustWON at home to Chichester Priory Park.  WC&T 149-4 (Miller 41, Lee 32) CHI 89 a/o (Abbott 3-9, White 2-4, Miller 2-8).  Scorecard. Damp miserable conditions again could not prevent the home side from grabbing a relatively comfortable victory at home to Chichester.  Chi won the toss and asked us to bat.  We raced to a hundred before a flurry of wickets gave the visitors a chance to slow the run rate.  We declared after 30 overs to give ourselves a chance of victory.  When we bowled, after separating their openers, wickets fell at regular intervals with everyone chipping in.  Eddie (with our third 41 of the week) and George are now on the batting board below but Dan's three-for doesn't quite make it.  So both us and Worthing now have 47 points with a game to go.  Last must win game is against Bognor Regis tomorrow.

Fri 27th August - LOST at home to Bognor Regis.  WC&T 155-7 (Miller 64), BR 157-2.  Scorecard.  Despite yet another half century from Eddie Miller - his third of the 11s SJCF, we couldn't quite do enough to get to the Final.  Too many wides was certainly a factor.  Good effort boys!
