Sat 21st August - 1st XI DREW at home to Dome Mission when play was abandoned due to bad light. DM 214-9 (Fitzgerald 5-50), WC&T 167-4 (Gable 54*). Scorecard. Fitz's first five-for of the season (and his fifth overall for the merged club) plus Jimmy "Whippet" Gable's first half century for us were no consolation as we couldn't grab the vital win we needed against Dome Mission. Ten overs were lost to bad light with us needing 50 to win and two batsmen set at the crease. Six draws and three abandoned / cancelled (or five draws and four lost to the weather if you like). We've lost one game and sit fifth. We cannot catch St Andrews in second now so will spend another year in Division Three. Mick was heartbroken afterwards but he's tried his best. We've also seen many new faces this year which have added to the team and we'll come back stronger next year - all be it in a tougher league against Worthing 3rds and Brighton & Hove 3rds as well as Scaynes Hill 1sts and a local derby against Storrington 1sts. The Third Division looks like being a very competitive which is good news for us! We always play well against bigger teams.
However whilst tragedy struck the 1sts, the 2nd XI overcame heavy odds and WON for the second successive season in Brighton against Belgrave Adelaide. WC&T 263, BA 183 a/o. Scorecard. Are we staying up? Adelaide took the eight points they needed to secure back-to-back promotions whilst the Green & Gold grabbed all thirty. If the 2s can grab the expected thirty against bottom side Littlehampton next week, a dramatic escape for Fingers's side could be on! We won in semi-darkness by a large margin after posting 263 batting first. Bruce "Deep Fat" Fryer scoring 72 (eight short of his club best 80 made last year), Callum "Boom Boom" Wyatt 65 and Dave "Yes I'm Really Here" Robinson 49. Adelaide struggled but did enough to pass 175 to secure the eight points. In complete darkness, Jack Glover won the match off JD's bowling.
Sun 22nd August - Sunday XI visited Midhurst to find the game was off! Match cancelled without a ball being bowled due to bad weather the day before and on the morning. Apologies to those players and the captain who trudged over there on the day without being warned in advance,

A disappointing festival but we sort of knew it would be after the fixtures were put back a week. As a result, both Millers, Glynne-Jones and Ben Hasler were all missing which would have made a huge difference. Perhaps we would have gained revenge against Pulborough for the hammering they gave us in the League and they could also helped us past Steyning but in the event, Boro hammered us again as did Horsham Trinity. Shane West certainly make a difference to any team but we'll have at least one of those types of player very soon at our club. On the plus side, Toby Glover made his first 16s half century and Mark Fischel had a good festival to make up for the dispapointing one he had last year. David Bowen-Davies as ever and Josh Reeves should also get a mention. Hope the GCSE results were better, boys!
Also a shame for Martin and Alan as they've tried manfully with the side this year and have little to show for their efforts.
Mon 16th August - LOST at Pulborough. WC&T 171 a/o (Fischel 57, Bowen-Davies 51), PUL 173-2. Scorecard. We lost convincingly in the end but it should be noted that Shane West who captains Boro's 16s plays in the County League for their 1sts! Good individual performances from David Bowen-Davies and Mark Fishel who both hit 50s which gets them on the board below.
David hits his 50!
Tues 17th August - LOST at Horsham Trinity. WC&T 71 a/o, HT 73-2. Nuff said.
Wed 18th August - WON at home to Southwater. SOU 208-8 (J.Reeves 4-39), WC&T 209-4 (T.Glover 59*, Bowen-Davies & Wyatt 35). Scorecard. A great team effort, a magnificent bowling spell from Josh Reeves claiming four vital wickets and a half century for Toby Glover to see us home and put a smile back on the coach and team faces. All the better as they had beaten us - softly many felt - at home in the league so very pleasing all round.
Toby hits his 50...
... and the team celebrates with a rainbow! Standing: Harvey Jones, Wyatt, Bowen-Davies, J.Glover, Fischel, J & C Reeves Kneeling: Scott, Tavares; Posing: T.Glover, Kowszun
Thu 19th August - LOST to Steyning. STEYN 203-9, WC&T 117 a/o. Scorecard. Hywel Jones captained the hosts and scored big before we were dismissed a long way short. He could be as good as his brother :)
Some scores made the boards below. We definitely haven't had some good bowling figures thusfar in the SJCF - Josh's have been the best of the festival for us. Hopefully the 11s can rectify matters!
