Week 18 - A great SJCF for the 13s and Sunday side achieve record win

(August 16, 2010)

Weekend Games

Saturday 14th August - 1st XI had their game abandoned at Broadbridge Heath. BBH won the toss and put Chilt into bat, and Malcolm Fitz scored what appeared a steady 41, with Rob Llewellyn adding 35* before the game was abandoned due the rain with Chilt making laboured progress on 112-4 after 37 overs. Stilted Scorecard HERE!  All other games in Div 3 of the WSICL were also abandoned - so no changes to the table.  We are 4th still with a chance of gaining the 2nd promotion place.

2nd XI had no game this weekend and are still sitting in the relegation zone.

Jonanthan Denton & pigDenton celebrates the record with porky friend

Sunday 15th August - Sunday side WON again against LodsworthWC&T 248-6 (Llewellyn 51, Denton 46), LODS 115 a/o (Tolson 4-15, Gee 2-21).  Scorecard. Our ninth win of the season which is the best of any for our friendly side since we merged the two clubs in 2000.  Well played boys and a triumph for Horatio who often wears his heart on his sleeve and his head on his shoulders.  Contributions from everyone in our innings today including a customary half century from Llewellyn, 46 from Denton and late flurries from Goring and Armstrong on a tricky pitch to bat on. In response, Loddy were destroyed by Tolson's four wicket opening spell.  JT's burst helped consign them to about 30-odd-7 at one point before their skipper came in with a late burst. Two wickets each for Liam Richman and Jim Gee, and some great catching from Richman, Armstrong and Ward (making a rare Sunday appearance these days) meant Lodsworth were all out for 115 and an easy win for a strong Chilt side.

 Under 13s SJCFU13s Goring 2010
The 13s celebrate after the demolition of Goring at the Rec.

9th August:  WON (20pts) at home to Goring.  WC&T 261-8 (JEFFRIES 114, Scott 47, Monaghan 31), GOR 45 a/o (Bryant 4-6).  Scorecard & Iain's Report. Although the victory was impressive and several players did extremely well, one lad stood out.  Will Jeffries, whose top score last year was 26*, surpassed that last week with an impressive knock of 41* against Horsham Trinity U14s and excelled himself today when he didn't just get 50, he went on and made that magical first ton for a colt!  Sensational.  Well done, Will.  All this when we were five down for not many before he re-built the innings ably with Wes Scott and then James Monaghan.  We should report that everyone else played a part, not least Tom Bryant whose off spin caused havoc in the Goring middle & lower order to produce easily his career best figures;  Wes Scott (who had held top average for the Club before the match) saw his average drop to 73 after "only" scoring 47!  Finally James Monaghan scored a season's best 31 - his eighteen wickets this year for the Club (and fifteen for the 13s) are usually where he contributes most but we often forget he can bat too.  So after many of this team had played a tough week for the 14s last week, this was a welcome boost for the whole club.  Next up is Arundel again at the Rec on Wednesday if the rain stays away.

U13s ArundelU13s celebrate draw.  Peck gives Miller electric shock - Glover looks on in amazement

11th August - DREW (3pts) with Arundel (7pts)WC&T 148-7 (Jeffries 57, Glover 39*) ARUN 147-6.  Scorecard and Report.  A bizarre end to the game at the Rec. tonight as the boys celebrated what we all believed was a winning draw against group rivals Arundel.  On reflection, the visitors took the winning draw on the faster scoring rate.  Nevertheless it was yet another close thrilling game against our larger and more illustrious neighbours.  What is it about us an Arundel - two really close games in the festival last year at Under 13s and Under 14s and now this wonderful advert for the great game.

The weather was damp throughout this lively encounter.  RCP won the toss and decided to bat first.  Again we started poorly and again Will Jeffries came to the rescue with the help this time of captain RCP and Toby Glover playing his first game in this age group for a long time.  Will is in the form of his life and today added a half century to his ton from Monday.  Despite all this fine batting, 148 was competitive but certainly didn't put us out of sight from a team which are always challenging.

When Arundel batted, their line up was more consistent as a team but neither side could wrench the initiative from the other for long.  In the last over bowled by our U11 Sussex player, Eddie Miller, Arundel needed seven to win and two off the last ball.  The batsman missed, they ran and Jeffries ran the non striker out running to the danger end.  However we had bowled 33 overs to their 37 so they "won the draw" on a faster scoring rate.  We remain unbeaten and still in with a chance of qualifying for the Final at the weekend.

U13s win at PortsladeJosh Steggles leads the celebrations at Portslade

12th August WON (20pts) at Portslade.  PORT 194-4 (Peck 2-27, Glover 2-36), WC&T 195-7 (RCP 62).  Scorecard and Iain's glowing report. He may have been a little down in the dumps after his own performance yesterday but what a day for captain Reece Collins-Powell today as a maiden first half century set up his side's great win down by the sea.  Again another close game but again, we get the better of a close finish.  At last a team at this club who can prevail when the going gets tough!  Fantastic performance boys.  All this after the opposition opener smashed 110*.  Ollie Salkeld saw us home with a great camo at the end.  Avoid the rain and win at home to Chichester and we could be in the Club's second SJCF final!  U13s captain RCP joins U14 captain Ben Hasler appearing on both U13s bowling and batting boards after the Portslade game..

13s after chi 2010 The boys relax after their hectic week

13s end of festival week 2010
and say a fond thank you to Coach Iain Jeffries

13th August - DREW (7pts) with Chichester Priory Park (3pts).  WC&T 180-6 (Scott 48*, Jeffries 42, RCP 36*), CHI 55-4 (Glover 7-5-2-1).  Scorecard and ReportSo in the end, it didn't matter as Iain confirmed with the SJCF committee that we (nor Arundel) couldn't qualify for the final as the other two groups had people who'd won more games.  So we played about with the batting a bit, gave everyone a bowl and still got much the better of the draw.  This has been easily our best week of the Festival so far and after the trials of entering a weakened team for the 14s last week, this has been a very welcome bonus.  Well played boys and well done coach.

Under 13s Hall of Fame

Some familar names - Chris Burton left us at the end of the 2007 season after a maiden half century.  The best bowling feats were all achieved this year or last.  After the league games, RCP was already on the bowling board twice, Gabriel Peck featured on the same board and Wesley Scott was amongst the batsmen.  All rounder Ben Hasler, who misses both the 14s and 16s Festivals this year, has the highest colts score for a league game when he made the unbeaten 49 at Wisborough Green shown below in the Identilam League last year.  Callum Wyatt made 48 in the thumping win over Barns Green for the 16s this year.  So the next record for colts to go for in 2011 is ......... who will be the first to get a half century in an Identilam League game?  We also await our second ton of course as news has filtered through that Max Rivers made a double hundred for Roffey against East Grinstead in the 12s Festival at the end of July!  Tom Pettman made an unbeaten 80 in Grinstead's reply.  Congratulations to Max from us here at WC&TCC
