Week 17: 1st XI draw exciting game but lose ground on rivals

(August 09, 2010)

Weekend Adult Games

7th August - 1st XI DREW with Three Bridges 3rds at the Rec  THR BRD 217-7 (Hodgson 3-52, Ashley 2-38), WC&T 209-9 (S.Pulling 83*).  ScorecardA tremendous game at the Rec which could have gone either way and for a change this season, the bowlers were on top.  Ultimately though we dropped points and dropped two places in the league table.

We won the toss and inserted the opposition for the nth time this season.  Then an understrength bowling attack seemed to have the game won at tea as 3B could only muster 217-7 from 48 overs.  Well bowled all especially Stephen Hodgson who claimed three wickets and effected a run out plus captain Rhino Ashley who opened the bowling and took a brace.  Once again we didn't miss Chaloner and Armstrong.  However when we batted, 3B proved as effective as us with the ball.  Our first three batsmen, Will Chambers - who has been in sound form this year, Neil Miller and the Foz (back in the side after a mid summer break) could only manage 22 runs between them.  James Gable came and went and it was left to Scott Pulling again to build partnerships to get us close.  He batted sensibly with Bruce "French" Fryer and Matthew Hennings making a rare appearance this season.  However once Fryer and Hennings had gone, Scott had to marshall our ever youthful tail.  Everyone hung around except the captain who is having a mare this year with the bat.  After our 46 overs, we were nine down and Scott had compiled a magnificant 86*.  So another draw but this one certainly wasn't boring and both sides will feel they should have won.  Other results went to form if not to plan. Our rivals both won although BBH didn't pick up 30 points but St Andrews did.  Worthing Chipps also won against Dome Mission.  So the table is as follows as we drop from 2nd to 4th:

Next week we're at Broadbridge Heath.  We need to win and BBH will be thinking the same.  If we fail to win, it could well be Division Three for us again in 2011.  St Andrews will be hoping we both draw whilst Worthing Chipps are as good as promoted.

Dave Robinson & Toby Glover 2010An old friend (pictured with Toby Glover) reappeared down by the sea at West Wittering

2nd XI LOST at West Wittering. WC&T 159-8 (Llewellyn 48, Hay 32), WW 163-4 (A.Reeves 2-48)  Scorecard.  We remain second from bottom and are twenty six points behind St Andrews 2nds who sit in the safety of third bottom of Division Seven.  However all this fact was incidental to the real story.  When the first wicket fell early on, a familiar face went out to bat at number 3.  Old Sleepy had slunk into the country in complete secret and completely jet lagged, tee'd off like he'd never been away before young WIll Hay forgot the script and ran him out.  That canny captain, Fingers, was not to deny him a good debut though as he believed he should open the bowling.  (Wicket keeping may have induced a long nap and he'd have disturbed the batsmen by his loud snoring).  Welcome home, old chap!

8th August - Sunday XI LOST at Ebernoe. EB 239-6 (C.Reeves 2-34), WC&T 209 a/o Scorecard.  Horatio failed to get his record ninth win for the Sunday side as we lost to the lot from Ebernoe.  Obviously a cunning plan to get them to have us for the Horn Fair!  They made a healthy 239 which we weren't going to get once Bill Hay and Bob had been parted.

Ollie Tavares 2009Ollie Tavares got 51 today

2nd August - LOST to Steyning.  STEYN 255-4 (Peck 2-27), WC&T 154 a/o (Tavares 51, Peck 38).  Scorecard.  According to Jefferies of Dock Green, the lads acquitted themselves well and were not disgraced.  Captain Ollie Tavares made his second half century for the Club which gets him on the board below.  Remember we are missing many of the 14s side who are all abroad so this week will be a great learning curve for the remaining 14s plus 13s and 12s who are playing.

Will Jeffries 2010More runs for Will Jeffries today at Trinity

3rd August - LOST to Horsham Trinity. WC&T 104-9 (Jeffries 41*), HT 108-5 (Monaghan 2-22).  Scorecard and Iain Jeffries reportAnother good performance today but ultimately a defeat to group favourites Trinity by five wickets.  Will Jeffries made a good unbeaten 41 which is another career best for the Club.  It also gets him on the Hall of Fame below but just over a hundred is not enough at Trinity against this team.  We bowled and fielded very well as they chased us down - the highlight being James Monaghan's 2-22.  Will J has now scored 65 runs in the festival and is yet to be out!

4th August - Match abandoned at Scaynes Hill.  Coach IJ writes: "We arrived as the rain started.  Thunder, lightning, very very frightening........!!! Great teas but the game was abandoned before a ball was bowled. The End".

6th August - Pulborough.  Match at the Rec. also washed out although Pulborough did nearly have time to nearly complete their innings before the rains came.  PUL 159-6 (Peck 2-20).  Scorecard
