NewsWeek 16 - The Browns help us ease past Partridge Green (August 02, 2010)

Weekend matches
Saturday 31st July - 1st XI WON at Partridge Green. PART 227-7 (J.Brown 3-46, Fitzgerald 2-47), WC&T 229-3 (N.Brown 74*, W.Chambers 69). Scorecard. Despite missing some key regulars, the 1st XI got back to winning ways. The Browns were back and playing in the same Green & Gold side for the first time in years at Partridge Green. They'd both played a game last year after spending so much of their youth playing for West Chiltington and were instrumental in our victory at the Green. We hadn't played at PG for about five years and after the home game was rained off, we were keen to get a win against lower opposition to keep the pressure on the top two. Five regulars are missing on holiday - Armstrong, Foster, Chaloner, Gable and Mumby - and it is therefore vital for the Club to have able replacements for these games in Augsut to help us out.
"I feeeeeeeeeeeeeeel nice like sugar and spice"
In the event after winning the toss, we restricted our hosts with fine bowling from everyone particularly the colts Dougie Glynne-Jones & Ben Miller as well as that old man Fitzgerald and (the ever youthful) James Brown. When we chased, it was left to opener Will Chambers, who has batted superbly all season, to set us off with his usual positive strokeplay; Ned Brown came in at number four to club an unbeaten 74 to help win the game with DJ Grandmaster Flash Pulling.
Two other Divison Three games ended in draws whilst the third saw Three Bridges beat the fading Barns Green. We're back up to second as St Andrews had their week off so we've played the same amount of games as most of our rivals now. All to play for as we entertain Three Bridges 3rds next week - a team who held us at Worth Abbey earlier this year. At this stage it would appear to be one of three to go up with Chipps - St Andrews, us or BBH. Chipps are fifty points ahead of us having played a game more. Broadbridge Heath like us started slowly but have built up a head of steam. If only we could have claimed their tenth wicket at our place! We visit BBH very soon having got one win and a draw against the Saints.

The 2nd XI DREW at home to Wisborough Green. WG 262-8 (Tolson 2-56), WC&T 220-5 (Fryer 49, Llewellyn 42). Scorecard and Wis Green Report. A great result and 12 points. Bob's 42 takes him over 1,000 runs again - he's only failed in 2002 and 2006 when playing for the merged club and has now exceeded 12,000 runs. The League has confirmed to us that following Middleton 3rds scratching at the start of the season, it's just two down from Division Seven. All Invitation League Tables
Sunday 1st August - The Sunday side WON at home to the nine men (and one mum) of Milland. WC&T 274-4 (S.Pulling 121, Llewellyn 68), MILL 191-9 (Aftanas 2-8, Tolson 2-30, S.Miller 2-44). Scorecard. Scott Pulling's first ton for the Club was the highlight of a fine batting performance at the Rec. Another victory for the Sunday boys! Bob & Scott put on 168 for the second wicket as the visitors were a bowler down. One of their mums fielded for the 40 overs and batted at number ten being 0* at the end! We fielded okay but put down a few catches - two behind the stumps by Big Bird - but their keeper also did a fine impression of Kamran Akmal. Callum Wyatt took over from BB after 20 overs. Pick of our bowlers were Stuey Miller who bowled an immaculate length through his eight overs and deserved more than the two wickets he picked up; also West Chilt's Mr Cricket, Gabriel Peck, made his Sunday debut and bagged their key batsman as they threatened to get close to our score. Eight wins now for the Sunday side which equals last year's total with two months of the season still left.
Under 12s Sussex Junior Cricket Festival
27th July - WC&T 141 a/o (Fritche 49) WON at Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching 120 a/o (MIIller 2-1, Fritche 2-15). Scorecard & Neil's report. A great start to the Festival for the Club and of course the Under 12s. Dom Fritche, fresh from his Under 14s debut last Sunday, opened the batting and led from the front hitting a career-best 49 as we posted a competitive but not insurmountable 141 from just over 33 overs. Once Fritche and Bailey Crouch were separated after a 50 odd run opening stand, successive batsmen thought they were still playing 20 over league cricket. More time to build an innings, lads. This meant the hosts had a few extra overs to reach their target but we bowled & fielded magnificantly - four bowlers picking up a brace including MOTM Fritche. Considering this is tennis week at Storrington which is Dom's major sport, this was a tremendous effort from the great man. Dom is on the batting board below thanks to his efforts at Littlehampton.
Wednesday 28th July - LOSING DRAW against Worthing Chippingdale. WC 193-2 (Bourne 121*. 37 overs), WC&T 163-7 (Miller 57, Cope 38). Scorecard & Reports We don't normally feature an opposition player in our score summary but when Worthing Chipps U12, Josh Bourne, makes an unbeaten 121, we feel it's worth mentioning! Josh had already got a ton against Goring but of course we made him work harder. Our fielding at this age group is improving by the day and many dives stopped certain fours. When it was our turn, we didn't wilt chasing a big score and both captain for the day - Eddie Miller - and Patrick Cope got WC&T career-best scores in our reply. Ed's first half century for the Club gets him above yesterday's hero Dom Fritche and into fourth place on the 12's Hall of Fame below. Patrick falls just short! You need better figures than 4-16 to guarantee a place on the 12's bowling board so who can manage this in the last two games? Who will be the first colt at this club to get a ton?
Thursday 29th July - LOST to Arundel. WC&T 145-7 (Menzies-Smith 53*), ARUN 146-2. Scoreboard. The 12s were well beaten today by the likely group winners, Arundel, at their place. Despite another career-best (and second successive 12's fifty) - this time from Henry Menzies-Smith, our total of 145 from the 37 overs was always going to be too light against a very good Arundel side. They got the runs with more than ten overs to spare. Tomorrow we are playing the weakest team, Goring, so we hope for a good end to an interesting and great learning experience for the boys. Henry's half century also gets him on the board below and let's hope the bowlers have more joy tomorrow.
Eddie and Bailey both get identical scores to help get the 12s to their highest score of the season
Friday 30th July - WINNING DRAW at home to Goring. WC&T 244-2 (Miller & Crouch both 84), GOR 105-4 (Crouch 2-6). Our last game of the week saw us score the predicted avalanche of runs against the group's weakest team but unfortunately, our bowling attack could not get through the Goring batting to give us a chance of victory. Both Eddie Miller and Bailey Crouch amazingly scored the same total - 84 - which was only three behind David Bowen-Davies's leading score of 87 for this age group and all colts which David shares with Dougie Glynne-Jones. It was also only 16 runs off that magical first colt's ton which gets closer with every game so well played both. Goring clearly never went for the runs and Neil bowled everyone. Five new batting scores in our Hall of Fame below but the fact we had no bowler that took more than two wickets all week suggests where our problems lay. Neverthess a good week for all and as ever, a great learning experience which will stand you well in future festivals and in senior cricket. Some of you will be featuring in later weeks starting next week for the Under 14s
