Week 15 - 2nds grab vital win at St Andrews

(July 26, 2010)

OneClub News

Wednesday 21st July - The Under 12s concluded their season with a good WIN at home to CuckfieldWC&T 112-6 (Lee 28*, Scott 24*), CUCK 89-6 (Abercromby 3-4).  Fine batting especially from George Lee and a career best 3-4 from Euan Abercromby were the cornerstones of a fine performance which sets the boys up nicely for the festival.  A large crowd gathered as it was training night and the 12s didn't disappoint.  Scorecard and Neil's Report.

Friday 23rd July West Chilt & Thakeham Wildcats WON the John Davenport Cup at last at Storrington against the Storrington Swans in a T20 game.  WC&T 142-9 (B.Chambers 54), STOR 132-5 (S.Goring 3-18, Fitzgerald 2-24).  Second trophy of the season!  Three years after our last T20 outing - a 15 run defeat to the Arundel Archers - the Wildcats were infinitely more successful in their second game.  Brian Chambers showed us what we'd missed with the bat this season getting our first ever T20 half century and Sean Goring made up for a duck and a dropped catch by claiming three Swans scalps as they looked to reach the target.  The bowling was good from everyone inclusing Tolson, Toby Glover and Fitzgerald.  Scorecard.  A big thank you to Phil Pickard, Simon Haggart and the Storrington guys for a great evening - we'll return the favour next year.  Barbecues, bar and all.  PP, get in touch!  I think the T20 format on a Friday should be continued whichever division our 1st XIs end up in next year.  Full detail plus scorecard soon. JD, I'm sure you were watching somewhere.

We look to have a good T20 side developing so the fixture secretary will be attempting more fixtures for the Wildcats this year and in coming years.

Saturday 24th July - Missing the skipper and the Foz, the 1st XI DREW at home to St Andrews 1st XI.  ST AND 238-7 (Mumby 3-69, Chaloner 2-29), 1sts 177-8 (S.Pulling 57*).  "Lord Of The Rings" journalism from the disappointed Saints plus scorecard are here.  In-form 1st XI bowler, Chaloner, injured himself bowling and without Mick, we struggled to contain their scoring meaning a draw was always the best we were likely to get from the game.  Keeper Scotty Pulling, with his most important score for the Club (a second fifty of the season and a WC&T career best 57*), helped keep the Saints bowlers at bay to save the game. We drop a place to 4th in the table but it's still all to play for as we enter the business end of the season.  Next Saturday, we visit Partridge Green who are in the relegation zone and drew with Barns Green this weekend.  Mick and the Foz will again be missing.

However the result of the weekend was definitely the game at Burgess Hill.  The 2nds also missing their skipper and with only one win all season, turned in a fabulous performance and WON against their 2s with just two balls to spare.  ST AND 2NDs 197-7 (B.Miller 3-11, A.Reeves 2-50), 2NDs 198-7 (Llewellyn 73, Hay 39* to see us home).  Scorecard & more Tolkienesque prose from our hosts.  Just when this correspondent and others have written off our chances of survival, the 2s put in this display.  This was a vital win keeping our chances of avoiding relegation very much alive.  We remain second bottom but this win will give us confidence in the remaining games.  Next week we host Wisborough Green 2nds (4th) at the Rec.

The Under 14s colts league concluded this weekend with two unfortunate defeats for our sides.

The Under 14s LOST a high scoring game (and conceded second place in the table in the process) to CrawleyWC&T 129-9 (Hasler 28*, Staples 27 RET, Garrett 17), CRAW 130-8 (Crouch 3-18, Smith 3-31).  Scorecard & ReportBoth sides fielded weekened teams - we were missing three front line bowlers/batsmen and according to the scorers, the Crawley running between the wickets was the difference.  However the 12s that came in all played well.  So we finish third which was about right after losing to the top two and Horley.  Final North Division table.

The Under 13s were also missing a few players and LOST to Barns Green at the Rec. BG 108-3, WC&T 82-5 (Scott 26 RET, Jeffries 17*).  Well played boys, a trophy from the WACA and we were competitive in a strong 14s League.  Scorecard.  Final South Division tableThe 13s are playing in the 13s SJCF and many of the boys will also represent the Club at Under 14s because many of our 14s are away at the start of August.

Sunday  25th July.  The Sunday side DREW at WatersfieldWAT 189-7 (Llewellyn 3-11, M.Goring 2-10, Harvey-Jones 2-15), Sunday 149-9 (Llewellyn 67).  ScorecardJust like the old days as Bob gets runs and wickets to help us stay competitive at Watersfield.  In the end we were hanging on a for a draw but considering the side we put out, captain Horatio was not too downhearted.  One senior debut (second ever game of cricket) plus five players under eighteen.  Tom Harvey-Jones [U15] in his first senior appearance took both openers' wickets.  A rare Sunday appearance for Reevers too.
