A Busy Cricket Week 13

(July 12, 2010)
OneClub News

The first silverware of the season!

The Under 13s have won the West Area Cricket League Shield meaning the Club has won this two years in a row now.  Perhaps they should put us in the harder Bowl next year?!!  Wikipedia updated.  Congratulations to both Brian & Iain Jeffries as well as captain, Reece Collins-Powell, and the team.  More detail in the Colts section at the end of this article...

Adult Cricket Week

Best Batting (all seasons): 121* - C.Pulling vs 3rd XI on 7/7/2010
Best Batting (2009): 87 - Dave Robinson vs. Presidents XI (10/7/09)
Best Bowling (all seasons): 4-28 - Rob Llewellyn vs. Nazeing Common (3/7/06)
Best Bowling (2009): 3-8 - Mick Armstrong vs Lingfield (9/7/09)

Monday 5th July: Midweek XI LOST to Nazeing Common by five wickets in the annual fancy dress party.  WC&T 158-9 (Armstrong 41), NC 161-5 (Alex Miller two good wickets). Half a scorecard here - the remainder will be entered when their half of the scorebook appears next week..  The commoners arrived in their droves as usual for their seventh visit. It provided the usual endless entertainment off the field but they were very professional on the field of play.  This year's theme was dodgy jackets - one umpire sporting a very glittery outfit.

We didn't bat aggressively enough which was mainly down to some great bowling, we didn't bowl in the right areas according to captain Llewellyn and there were too many wides & byes which were predominantly down to Big Bird behind the stumps.  Well bowled Miller boys and Vanstone's having no luck in the wickets column.  Following the close, we had the usual barby and festivities.

Brad Vanstone & Reevers vs Steyning
Bradders & Reevers take the applause of Steyning at the end of our innings

Tuesday 6th July: Midweek XI LOST a good game to the Steyning Midweek XI in a 45 over match.  STEYN 245-7 (O.Kowszun 3-43), WC&T 193 a/o (Armstrong 66).  Scorecard.  This was Steyning's first visit here as a merged club - our last visit there was in 2002 when we won by five wickets but there was only one game a season against each opponent in those days.  Their total was the lowest ever made by an opposition against us but there was never any danger of a repetition of that event.  The strength of the side brought today shows how far the Green & Gold has come in the intervening years.  If Steyning would like to return in 2011, we'd be pleased to see them.

  Midweek & 3rd XI
The two teams pose in front of the pavillion after the Academy game

Wednesday 7th July: Midweek XI LOST their third game in a row against the yoof of the 3rd XI in another good game at the Rec. MID 253-8 (C.Pulling 121*, C.Reeves 3-24), 3rd XI 255-5 (Jones 100*, Denton 2-32). Scorecard. 3rd XI captain Chambers said it was easy, his opposite number Denton claimed it was mainly down to "that ringer" from Horsham. Horatio was keen to repeat the performance next year however if only so he can get the phone numbers of all the yoof to bring the avErage age of the Sunday side down to below 70.

Owain Jones
Owain Jones destroyed the Midweek side on Tuesday and Wednesday

The main talking point for this correspondent though was the pre-match entertainment.  The Red Arrows were too expensive so we were treated to a spectacular display of football from the yoof.  That old lag Gee (who's never one to shirk a challenge) joined in and one of the little fellas (6 ft no doubt) kicked the ball in the air in Jim's general direction.  The great man rose like a (rather large) swallow to head the ball, missed and crashed his shoulder like a good prop forward into our (rather solid) fencing which surrounds the patio.  As Nanny Jean enquired about his general health, Jim got up, dusted himself down, and marched off leaving me to check the general state of the fencing.  Fortunately no one else saw the incident so no damage done...

Thursday 8th July: Midweek XI vs. Lingfield was cancelled as the opposition only had seven players.

Friday 9th July: Midweek XI WON a high scoring game against thePresidents XI for their first win in this fixture for six years.  Walter & Bob in the runs again.  PRES 296-4 (Stephenson 122, Spooner 100*; J.Chaloner 2-45), CHAIR 303-3 (J.Chaloner 107, Llewellyn 98*).  Scorecard

Weekend Games

Saturday 10th July: Good news at last.  We go into our weekend break next weekend in the promotion places in Division Three after the 1st XI WON a crucial game comfortably away at Barns Green. BG 160 a/o (Chaloner 6-30), WC&T 164-2 (Chambers 51 in 18 balls, Miller 47*, Foster 45).  Great batting from Will Chambers again aided by Miller & the Foz ensured Walter's continuing good form with the ball was not wasted.  No Conrad this weekend either so well played lads!   Scorecard.  Invitation League Tables

Not such good news at the Rec where the 2nd XI LOST their game to Horsham Trinity 2nd XI by about 100 runs.  HT 264 (Budgen 1-25, L.Richman 1-38, Hodgson 1-65), WC&T 136 a/o (Llewellyn 38).  Scorecard

Sunday 11th July.  The Sunday side LOST at home to Worthing Forresters.  WC&T 192-5 (C.Pulling 71, Llewellyn 69), WF 193-3. ScorecardToo many dropped catches was the verdict from captain Horatio as we lost our first game against the Foresters for a number of years.  Under 14s George Staples made his debut and bowled well with his spin but the bowling today was ineffective and when chances were offered, they invariably were not taken.
Colts Games

Tuesday 6th July: U13s WON comfortably at Pulborough in their last West Area League game and remained unbeaten in this league for the five games.  We have retained the title won a year ago! WC&T 122-2 (4 retirees), PUL 76-7 (Peck 2-6).  Scorecard & Report.

Wednesday 7th July: The unbeaten U11s march on as they WON comfortably atBarns Green in their IDL game and stay top.  WC&T 128-2 (Miller, Lee, Cope, Jones all retired), BG 61-5  ScorecardNo doubt super coach Fitz will send a report through soon...

Friday 9th July.  Nick Burrough's U9s WON at Barns Green in their soft ball pairs cricket in the Identilam League.  WC&T 286, BG 230.  We're off the bottom and up to mid table!  Well played boys and girls - Kate Burroughs made her debut tonight for proud coach Nick!

Saturday 10th July.  The U10s LOST at Billingshurst in a league game.  We remain comfortably in mid table.

The undefeated U11s WON at Madehurst for a friendly by four wickets. MADE 85-9 (H.Staples 3-18), WC&TCC 86-6 (Treasure 24, Cope 16). Scorecard

Toby Glover
TG has another great w/e with the ball

The high-flying U14s WON a low-scoring game against the ten men of Three Bridges to stay top of the IDL North Division.  WC&T 89 a/o (14.4 overs. Glover 22, Garrett 17, Ackland 16), 3B 69 a/o (16.2 overs. Glover 4-18, Beer 3-8)  ScorecardOnce again Toby Glover proved the match winner backed up by good bowling from Beer and Hasler and good batting by Garrett and Ackland.

Sunday 11th July.  The 12s LOST their third game in a row by ten runs at Barns Green. BG 131-6, WC&T 121-5 (Scott 26*, Fritche 24, Good 23).  We've sluimped to eighth out of twelve following this latest defeat.  Scorecard

The 16s WON easily at home against the same opposition.  WC&T 243-8 (Wyatt 48, Bowen-Davies 46, A.Miller 30*), BG 100 a/o (T.Glover 4-19, Glynne-Jones 3-21).  Scorecard. Toby's neck a neck with Mick going for top wicket taker and Alex Miller hit his highest score for the Club as the 16s closed their season in style at the Rec.

The 10s and 14s played two six-a-side tournemants.  The 10s didn't get out of the group stages.  The boys did well, in a strong group, but we only won one game (Billingshurst) and lost two (E Grinstead & Horsham Trinity) so, like the England football team, we flew home after the group stage of the competition.  Crispin says he hopes they all found it a good experience, if a tough one. We were congratulated on playing in a sporting manner too. So well done and thank you to everyone.

The 14s fared better reaching the Quarter Finals before they were swatted away like a fly by tournament favourites, Ansty.  The mid Sussex boys were all public school trained and played for Sussex, Knights or were Knights rejects.  We lost our first game narrowly to Horsham -  sound batting from Tavares  and bowling from Beer.  We then beat Slinfold with Hasler clubbing 48* (still no fifty for the Club!) and more accurate bowling and fielding before edging past Steyning B (their 13s which were better than their 14s!); Hasler again seeing us home with an unbeaten 30 odd and great bowling from Curtis, excellent fielding from Crouch and a good innings from Garrett.  "Nasty" restricted us to just 34 in our five overs before knocking off the runs in nine deliveries!  They hadn't lost a wicket in the group stages and that record didn't end with us.  So a great team effort in the sunshine.  The boys are pictured below with a proud coach, Shaun Tavares.
