NewsWeek 9 - Good weekend for colts as adults go winless (June 14, 2010)
One Club News
Tuesday 8th June
The unbeaten Under 11s were due to travel to Roffey for their IDL game. However their unbeaten record is still intact as the match has been cancelled due to the rain affecting Sussex this week. Coach Malcolm Fitzgerald has already re-scheduled for the 13th July at Roffey; 18:00 start.
Saturday 12th June
The unbeaten Under 11s WON in a friendly at Madehurst. More news soon.
The 1st XI DREW for the third time this season in their home game with Broadbridge Heath in WSICL Division Three. WC&T 262-8 (Foster 79, Chambers 61), BBH 179-9 (Chaloner 4-37, Ashley 2-19). Scorecard We batted first and made 262-8. Sam the Foz made a West Chilt best 79 with some typical lusty blows before being well caught at midwicket after Will Chambers had made 61 opening. Some more beefy hitting from the lower order allowed us 48 overs at the opposition. Even Fitzgerald located the middle of the bat and was unbeaten on 22 .
In reply, BBH were nine down and nearly 100 behind when we ran out of overs. Two weeks on the trot, the oppo have been nowhere near and we couldn't bowl them out. So that's just one win, three draws and two rained off for the 1sts as our season is yet to get going. The table looks like this as Worthing Chipps hits the top:

Next week, the 1sts travel to Dome Mission whilst the 2nds entertain Belgrave Adelaide 2nds who came up with them last year.
Sunday 13th June
The Under 16s WON at Capel in a close IDL Under 16s game. CAP 131-5 (J.Reeves 2-25) WC&T 135-9 (J.Reeves 43, Harvey-Jones 25*). Scorecard. Josh Reeves took two wickets and then made 43 unbeaten runs as the 16s snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in Surrey. Good bowling from U14s Ben Hasler & Toby Glover with some lusty hitting from Wyatt, Glynne Jones and a composed 25* from Harvey-Jones to see us home with Josh. Our last four batsmen all made ducks meaning we needed Josh to come back and finish the job after earlier retiring! Well played boys.

The Sunday side LOST to the Fleet Street Strollers who retained the Marshall Cup for the xth year in a row. FSS 197- 7 (Vanstone 2-26, Denton 2-30), WC&T 167-9 (Llewellyn 44, Budgen 34). Scorecard Ah those merciless hacks!! We still have never held the trophy as a merged Club... The Strollers batted first and made 197 from their 40 overs. After ten overs they were only on about ten runs after a fine opening spell from Mick and Brad Vanstone on debut. However they accelerated to set us five an over to win the Cup.
In reply, with the Cup glistening in the evening sunshine, we fell thirty odd short. The Strollers bowled tightly and fielded like terriers to protect their total on Jim's usual quick track. Ollie Budgen hit some big shots (after his quieter role watching Matt Goring hit his ton last week) and Ed Rydon did his usual bludgering but alas it was not enough. The Strollers were impressed with our new opening bowler Brad Vanstone. Ed's brother Will Rydon also made his debut and made it four Rydons who have played for us this season! Mick took no wickets and made few runs after his usual one hour sleep from a night on the Brighton tiles. On a positive side, we made runs and took wickets without him but he shouldn't feel too downhearted. There's always next weekend!
The Budgie coaxes Afro away from the World Cup game on the telly.
Note lack of dirt on flannels after 40 overs fielding...
The Sunday side play Wisborough Green at home next weekend - usually it's away and we've never won again as a merged club. Note that the Sunday game at Storrington which was washed out last month has been re-arranged as a midweek fixture for Friday 23rd July at the Swans' ground. 1800 start with a T20 game and barbecue afterwards.
Stat Attack
This week, it's the top batting averages courtesy of our friends at PlayCricket. (NB: The weekend game for U11s against Madehurst not included). Colts (both Sussex players incidentally!) in bold below. Minimum three innings. Note neither Bob nor Armstrong are top - Mick is just outside the top ten in eleventh (for the moment).
