Week 8 - Adults show Colts the way this weekend

(June 08, 2010)
One Club News

Friday 5th June
The Under 14s were due to play Ifield but the visitors couldn't raise a side and conceded the game...

Saturday 5th June
Under 13s LOST at leaders Scaynes Hill U14s in the IDL Under 14s South Division.  SH 102-3 (RCP 1-13, Peck 1-14), WC&T 72-6 (Scott 25 RET, RCP 15)ScorecardThe 13s bowled first and the hosts got over a hundred.  Few extras this week and three bowlers getting a wicket each.  In reply, Wes Scott retired again, captain Reece Collins-Powell made 15 and Ollie Salkeld also reached double figures but the Scaynes Hill attack was very strong and in truth, we never got close to the run rate.  BJ was very complimentary about the host's generosity and the skill of their players.  Next match for the 13s is another IDL game at home to Southwater in two weeks.

The Under 14s LOST their unbeaten record in a close game at Horley in the IDL Under 14s League North.  WC&T 114-5  (Glover 26 RET, Tavares 25 RET), HOR 117-3 (Ackland 1-10). The 14s came up short in their game over the border in Surrey this morning.  They won the toss and batted first.  The innings was paced well and with the help of 18 wides (26 extras), we made 114 in our 20 overs.  Tavares and Glover retired; Hasler made 14 and Curtis opening with Tavares made 10.  Hasler and Glover ran twenty singles between them so they were pretty tired at the end of their respective innings.  Horley captain Andrew Thomas took 3-9 in two overs to put the brakes on at the end.  This proved crucial to the final result.

When Chilt took to the field, the home side's innings was almost a mirror of the Chilt one.  Evenly paced and two retirees who upped the pace at the right time - number four bat Derham hitting 16 off one Brandon Smith over.  Banner opened the bowling, came off and then on again! 2 overs for 9 for the Banjo.  Glover bowled through 4 overs for 14 - a few full length deliveries today but again Horley played him sensibly and waited for his spell to end. Hasler bowled fast and too full again on occasion.  The captain was expensive but unlucky not to have more than his first Under 14s wicket to show for his efforts as three balls looped off the strike batsman's bat into open spaces.  Tavares and Ackland also both picked up wickets - Ackland and Garrett took good catches - but the hosts got the runs in the last over.  Coaches Goring & Tavares were pleased with the overall display but encouraged the boys to have more belief and passion in the field.  Staples back behind the stumps again today.  Hard luck lads - we're away at Slinfold in two weeks time.

The 1st XI (12pts) DREW with the leaders, Three Bridges 3rd XI (6pts)Scorecard.  We made 256 with Hardisty, Llewellyn, Armstrong and "Extras" all making half centuries...  In reply Three Bridges were five down and more than 100 behind when stumps were drawn.  Another good game for keeper Hardisty who made his second half century in his second game. Llewellyn and Armstrong made their reliable contributions with the bat as Bob returned to 1st team action.  Mick made his highest score for the 1sts so far in an unbteane 80.  However when you make 250 and bowl well, invariably the opposition stops going for the runs and starts thinking about a draw early on.  We didn't have enough bowling to frighten them despite a couple from the ever dependable Chaloner and a debut one from the Foz.   Fitzgerald in particular is looking less threatening this year - economical maybe but not taking wickets.  Must be the diversions of giving up smoking and being a colts super coach?  Skipper Armstrong told the website: "I can't believe we only got 12 points after completely dominating the league leaders.  A good team effort but although we are still unbeaten, we only have one win to show from five games.  We have to start winning soon!"

Next weekend, we are at home to Broadbridge Heath who are just below us in the table.  The game starts at midday prompt due to the England World Cup game which will be shown in the pavilion afterwards.  The table now looks like this with us having beaten the team in second spot, outplayed the leaders and remaining unbeaten in the League.  Of course, we sit errrrrrr 6th!!

Hodgsons
Stephen (pictured with son Jake) picking up his man-of-the-match award
at a special ceremony in Wisborough Green Village Hall last night

A man-of-the-match performance from Stephen Hodgson as the 2nd XI WON their first game of the season at home to West Wittering 1st XI at the Rec. WC&T 296-7 (A.Reeves 51, S.Tavares 49, Charnaud 44*), WW 219 a/o (S.Hodgson 6-39)  Scorecard.  The 2nds passed 200 for the third time this season at home (in just their third home game) amassing 296 runs.  Big contributions from Alan Reeves, Shaun Tavares and a useful unbeaten knock from Joe Charnaud the main contributors.  Then just as Wittering were holding on comfortably, our vice chairman comes on 19th change (after a rub down from his butler) and takes a career best 6-39 to follow up his 36 runs with the bat.  These are the third best ever figures for any 2nd XI side but don't quite get the enobled one into our top ten best ever bowling stats.  Again masterful captaincy from Big Fingers holding Lord Hodgson back to lure the opposition into a false sense of security! The 2nds are up to 5th and out of the relegation  zone after this win...

No game for the 2nds next weekend as we were due to play Middleton 3rds who have resigned from the League.  So the side will be expected to congregate at the Rec to watch the 1sts game before watching the England World Cup game later.

Billingshurst ground
Billy's lovely new ground at Jubilee Fields

Matt Goring the Arab
Matt grabs his first ever ton fof the Club

The Sunday XI WON easily at home to Ansty Sunday 2nd XI by ten wickets.  ANS 152 a/o (Denton 4-11, C.Pulling 2-20), WC&T 155-0 (Goring 109*, Budgen 37*)  Scorecard. Five wins out of six!  This is crazy.  Ansty crumbled to 152 all out after being reasonably well set before Matt Goring smashed his first ton for the Club - 109*- in an unbeaten opening stand with Ollie Budgen (37*).  Four wickets for captain Denton and three catches for the ever cheerful polished Pole, Mr Pavel Paul Aftanas.

Matt is our Under 14s coach of course and beat his previous best of 95 also for the Sunday side at Wisborough Green a year ago.  Always a great milestone for any yoof, Matt was beaming last night so much that I could see it in his text to me on my raspberry.  His ton was our fifth of the season and it's the fourth time in our history we've recorded a ten wicket victory. (Wikipedia updated!)

Next weekend for the Sunday side are the Fleet Street Strollers at the Rec. for the Marshall Cup.  This will be our toughest test so far this season - we've still never held the Cup as a merged club!

How are we doing this season?

The Under 11s are now the only side at the Club with a 100% record following the 14s' defeat at Horley.  The 2nd XI got off the mark with a good victory this weekend.
