Week 7 - Rain frustrates league sides but big success everywhere else!

(May 31, 2010)
OneClub News

Only the Sunday side featured this week for the adults leaving the path clear for the colts to shine...  Another great week for our Club.

Tuesday 25th May
Under 11s (2nd) WON at Billingshurst.  WC&T 94-1 (Cope 22 RET, Lee 21 RET, Miller 20 RET), BILL 71-4 (Lee 2-5).  Scorecard. MOTM today appears to be George Lee.

A report from that master wordsmith Fitzgerald. M showing us how many different ways you can spell Zac's surname.:

"West Chiltington Under 11s kept their undefeated record against Billingshurst with a hard fought victory.  We lost the toss and were asked to bat.  The openers Ed Miller and George Lee got the team off to fast start and both retired undefeated.  The middle order looked to build on a good start and against some good support bowling, scored steadily.  Patrick Cope at number 4 made a swift 22 retired and helped by not out knocks from Zac Cissoti and Alex Scott with their innings closed West Chilt made 94 for 1.

Billingshurst started their reply positively against some probing bowling.  The first wicket fell at the end of the third over bowled by Zac Cisotti.  This brought Will Cromby to the crease who scored a swift retired 20 and with Billingshurst at 52 for 1 after 8 overs the match was evenly poised.  Ed Miller and George Lee then ensured that further Billingshurst progress was stalled by good bowling, supported by excellent fielding and they finished with one and two wickets each respectively.  Billingshurst finished their innings well short at 71 for 4.  The difference in the teams was the depth of West Chiltington's talent who used eight bowlers all of whom bowled well and all the boys fielded exceptionally.

Well done to all the boys who all contributed to another fine victory".  The IDL Under 11's table looks like this with three teams having a 100% success record:

  P w l t BatP BowlP Pen NRR Pts
Barns Green 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 2.62 40
West Chilt. & Thakeham 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 2.2 40
Plaistow 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 1.51 40
Horsham Trinity 2 0 1 1 3 2 0 -0.9 15
Steyning 2 0 1 1 1 0 0 -1.13 11
Roffey 1 0 1 0 3 5 0 -0.58 8
Billingshurst 2 0 2 0 5 2 0 -2.3 7
Pulborough 1 0 1 0 2 0 0 -2.8 2

Meanwhile over at Slinfold, the Under 9s LOST by just four runs in their pairs cricket match.  SLIN 276-4 (A.Bugden 1-6), WC&T 272-4 (Tipple 10, Tolson 10).  A few dropped catches according to coach Matt Burroughs.  Scorecard

Alex Bugden the pick of the bowlers this week - the four Slinfold wickets taken were shared around - and both Luke Tolson (John's youngest brother) and Oli Tipple (again doing well with the bat) making double figures.  Good effort, guys.  Let's win the next one!

Friday 28th May
The Under 13s WON their first West Area Cricket Association (WACA) game tonight at Chichester Priory Park against Chi's B team (Under 13s?).  WC&T 148-6 (25 overs - Jeffries & Tanner RET, Richardson 17*), CHI B 120-6 (Tanner 2-21)Scorecard. MOTM appears to be Louis Tanner.

I Jeffries clearly going for the coach of the year award as he logs his match scorecard and report very swiftly.  "Chilt travelled to Chichester to play their U13 B's.  After winning the toss we chose to bat. With a 're-shuffled' batting order we began well despite the early loss of Gabriel Peck.  Josh Steggles & Ollie Scott batted well, with Ollie reaching a PB of 11 - well done Ollie! James Monaghan (11) & Ollie Salkeld (14) both fell just as they really got going. Will Jeffries & Louis Tanner put on a very useful partnership with Will retiring on 23 & Louis 22. George Richardson (Not Out 17) took to the crease with a trademark 6 in his first few balls! A short but productive last couple of overs with Eddy Miller (Not Out 9).  With a fairly sizeable number of extras (29), Chilt ended with a very respectable 148 for 6 off 25 Overs.

As expected, Gabriel Peck & James Monaghan bowled very economically in the first 6 overs, keeping the run rate down & Chi's total to just 17 off 6 overs.  As a result & with a challlenging run rate now required, joint captain's Jeffries & Peck (in the absence of RCP) could give all the boys a bowl this evening.  Louis Tanner picking up two wickets & Will Melhuish taking a wicket in his maiden appearance for Chilt. Peck & Monaghan finished off the last few overs to ensure the game was won comfortably.

Another good fielding performance from Chilt.  One good catch by Eddy Miller & another absolute 'belter', again by Eddy Miller! A solid performance behind the stumps from Will Jeffries, only 3 byes in 25 overs.

A great start to our West Area campaign - well done lads!"

Chi has three teams in this age group - their A Side is in the Bowl and their B & C teams in the Shield with us, Findon, Goring & Pulborough.  The Bowl also contains Arundel, Bognor, Eastergate and Midhurst.  These are the teams we invariably play in the SJCF rather than the Identilam teams.  All these WACA games are 25 overs a side (IDL is 20 overs) but players retire at 20 and not 25.  Full detail on the WACA League can be found here - no other age group is playing in the WACA this season

Saturday 29th May
In the Identilam Under 14s South Division, the Under 13s WON their second game in 24 hours against 9-man Pulborough in the rain.  WC&T 75-9 (Wes Scott 38*), PULB 56 a/o (Miller 2-9, Tanner 2-10).  ScorecardAnother report from our coach of the moment, Mr I Jeffries:

"So, 12 hours after leaving Chichester, we met at Watersfield for the Chilt U 13 -v- Pulborough U14 in the Identilam Under 14's League. Chilt won the toss & chose sensibly to bat (as opposed to batting sensibly!).

We started in the drizzle which was on/off for our innings.  After a range of text book shots from Reece C-P (unluckily caughtt behind), the rest of the lads struggled to get going in the miserable weather and the only really notable performance was Wes Scott retiring on 25.  With a few other players chipping in here & there, Wes entering the ring again for the last over & took no prisoners - smashing another 13 off the Pulborough bowlers & finishing off with a fine 38 Not Out, ably supported by Eddy Miller(Wes' score beats Callum Wyatt's top colts' score of 35 last weekend!)

As we have come to expect from this side, they took to the field full of confidence & belief they could win, even with a low total.  Reece C-P & Wes bowled economically, with George Richardson & Josh Steggles keeping the run rate down.  Pick of the bowlers today undoubtedly our guest U12, Eddy Miller, with figures of 2 for 9 off 4 overs.  Overall a great fielding performance by all the boys, the basics of catching, accurate throwing & supporting each other payed off.

Great efforts lads - you deserved the win!"

Rain Stops Play

In the West Sussex Invitation League, as expected, both the 1st & 2nd XI games against bottom club Partridge Green in Division Three, and against the Division Seven leaders, Wisborough Green, were cancelled due to the forecasted persistent rain in the area.  All teams pick up 8pts.

No games were possible at all in Division 3 due to the rain whilst Belgrave Adelaide beat Littlehampton 3rds (who conceded) in Division 7.  Both the other Division 7 games (including ours) were postponed.  So we remain 7th out of 9 in Division 3 and 7th out of 8 in Division 7.  The 2nds have two defeats and a draw to show for their efforts from the four games.  The 1sts remain undefeated in the League - we have one win and a draw from their four games and have yet to complete a game at home due to the weather around here!

Next weekend, rain permitting, the 1sts are at Three Bridges to play their 3rds who are currently top of Division Three whilst the 2nds host West Wittering who are just above us in 6th in Division Seven.

The 12s WON at home to PulboroughWC&T 102-7 (Crouch 25 RET, Good 16), PULB 69-9 (Miller 3-7, Cope 2-6). Scorecard and report here.  Another comfortable win for a colts side this weekend and some better weather thankfully.  Patrick Cope did well in his first game of the season for the 12s but the highlights were Bailley Crouch's runs and Lee & Miller's opening bowling.

The boys are back

The Sunday side WON returning to winning ways at home to Albourne & Sayers Common in another 40 over winner-takes-all game.  WC&T 256-6 (Llewellyn 100, Gee 40*), A&SC 180-9 (T.Glover 3 wickets).  Scorecard.  Another good win for the Sunday side who are unrecognisable from two years ago.  Four wins out of five now.  Stalwarts Llewellyn's 15th ton of his merged club career and Gee's highest score for the Club in nine years were the rocks of Chilt's innings before T.Glover and Aviss in particular bowled extremely well when the visitors chased.  All three Glovers played with Jack and Martin opening the batting and Jack keeping.  "It's a family affair".
