NewsWeek 6 - 1sts grab first league win at St Andrews (May 24, 2010)
OneClub News
Top Bowlers & Batsmen so far this season appear at the foot of this round up.
Following last weekend's success, this weekend was a little more mixed but the 1sts got their first league win at last to kick start their season and the 2nds picked up some good bonus points in their home draw.
Monday 17th
Nick Burrough's Under 9 LOST to Roffey at home on Monday. WC&T 196-12 (Burroughs 16), ROFF 288-6 (Burroughs 3-4) Scorecard. Man of the match was definitely coach's son Matt Burroughs who bagged the top score of 16 in our total of 196 before snaring four Roffey wickets when their turn came. The visitors only lost six wickets to our twelve which didn't help our total! Only Oli Tipple reached double figures but having been out meant his net score was below ten. Seven of the eight Roffey players got double figures which was downsized to six after wickets were deducted. In the end, the winning margin of 92 runs was pretty conclusive - we lost 60 runs in wickets to their 30 but even if we'd lost the same or even none, they scored far more runs than us. Onwards and upwards.
Zac bowled superbly
Thursday 20th
Fitz's Under 11s WON easily by 10 wickets in their first game of "real cricket" at home to Pulborough in the Under 11s IDL League. PULB 48-7 from 15 overs (Tossi 3-4, Cisotti 3-5), WC&T 52-0 (Miller 20 ret, Cope 17*). Scorecard. A report from coach Malcolm "Flower" Fitzgerald:
"Pulborough won the toss and their opening pair got off to a steady if unspectacular start against the accurate bowling of George Lee & Zac Cisotti. The game sprang into life in the fifth over when Zac took three wickets in four balls finishing the over with a triple wicket maiden (all bowled). Zac's final figures of 3-5 put him joint fifth in the best ever club Under 11 bowling statistics! West Chilt thereafter, with excellent support bowling from Ed Miller, Crispin Tavares, Dan Abbott and Harry Staples, slowed the run rate to a trickle. Alex Tossi on debut then blew the middle order away with a fine spell finishing with 3-4 and went joint fourth in the best ever bowling statistics for the under 11 age group. Pulborough in their 15 overs reached a total of 48. The fielding was excellent with every catching chance given held. The West Chilt openers then tore into the Pulborough bowling with Ed Miller and Patrick Cope both finishing undefeated as West Chilt won by ten wickets in just 8.4 overs. An excellent start to the season with a fantastic team performance by all the players".
'Grazie mille' to the two Italians who demonstrated that their nation can also play cricket!
Saturday 22nd
Under 10s LOST heavily at Steyning in their hard ball pairs cricket game. WC&T 261-6, STEY 360-4. Scorecard
Ollie T retired and paced innings well
Under 14s WON at home to Roffey and remain unbeaten in the Under 14s IDL North Division. ROFF 118-4, WC&T 119-5 (Tavares 27*, Hasler 21, Smith 17*) (18.1 overs) Scorecard.
The 14s batted well as a good team effort overcame Roffey at the Rec. Ben Hasler won the toss yet again and inserted the opposition. A good all round bowling effort from everyone - the captain was the pick of the bowlers even though he and Brandon Smith went wicketless - four bowlers shared the wickets with only Jamie Curtis struggling for line and length. The fielding was okay - no dropped catches - but Toby Glover & Hasler, sharing the fielding captaincy, were guilty of too many fielders being half way out - no one stopping singles or the boundaries. Also bowlers who bowled a good third over were taken off and asked to bowl an individual over later. This strategy worked for Glover but not for Hasler who changed ends nor Tavares. Both Roffey openers retired but it took them 12 plus overs to do so. After 15 overs, the visitors were 69-2 but they hit 49 off the last five overs and we had a game on.
In reply, Chilt got off to a flyer again - Curtis made six quick runs and was out. Joint captain Hasler (21) and Ollie Tavares (27 ret) then put on 54 for the second wicket in good time - it took us just over ten overs to get the same score Roffey achieved after 14. After that although wickets fell, the scoring rate could afford to slow so that we won in the nineteenth over. Smith finished undefeated on 17 and Beer 11. Harman (1) and Crouch (1) persished early in their innings to pick of Roffey bowlers Max Lewis. Glover made 12 today. 16 wides helped us to our target - altogether there were 50 extras in total today which is too many for an IDL 14s league game. If we want to keep winning, bowling extras must be reduced and the fielding sorted. Well batted lads! The top of the Northern Division as of Saturday afternoon:

In the afternoon, both our league teams did well...
Mick's 1st XI (30pts) WON at St Andrews 1st XI (9pts) by three wickets. ST AND 167 a/o (Chaloner 4-59), WC&T 170-7 (S.Goring 48, Foster 39) Scorecard. Our first maximum of the season (30 points) against a useful St Andrews side in Burgess Hill. Sean Goring struck a great 48 as we looked to be flagging in mid innings and Sam Foster returning from Uni also did well with the bat again after we bowled well and fielded well to restrict the home side to under 170. Chaloner snared four wickets & two each for a proud captain Armstrong, Tolson and vice captain Rhino Ashley. West Sussex Invitation League Division 3 Table
Martin's 2nd XI (274-5) (13pts) DREW at home to St Andrews 2nd XI (9pts) (223-7) in a high scoring game at the Rec. Scorecard & marathon St Andrews' Report. (Checkout their long report for the kind words at the end).
Wardy's Report: A high scoring game at the Rec, in very warm conditions ended in a draw - as Chilt 2nds failed to knock the necessary wickets to beat a spirited response by St Andrews (Burgess Hill). The day was largely about Sherpa though - Mark Aylward was playing his last game for Chilt before his relocation to Somerset. (ooh-arrrghhh). Presented with an excellent track, and a superb outfield - Chilt won the toss and batted. There was some early movement in the air and off the pitch, but in truth is was a terrific pitch to bat on, and after Ward (4) missed out edging a short ball to first slip, it was Aylward and Llewellyn whom filled their boots - Sherpa scoring a Club PB of 69, and Bob 63.
The loss of those chaps didn't stem the runs - in fact the rate stepped up significantly with a typically cavalier and entertaining 50 from Iain Jeffries on one of his rare outings, as well as a speedy 29 from Bruce Fryer ensured Chilt reached 275, and declared on 46 overs.
Chilt were a little wayward in attempting to defend the total and strike early blows - and StA brought up 50 in quick time - albeit with great luck and most runs being scored over, through and aside of the slips off Jake Hodgson's bowling. James Kowszun at the other end bowled a probing spell.
The arrival of Stephen Hodgson tightened the rate and brought wickets - he and JK both striking - and then Liam Richman produced a great spell which produced 2 wickets.
As the sun began to set - Chilt were hopeful of converting the victory - and Sherpa was back into the action spinning the ball out of the sun to take a wicket to close out his Chilt career.
However, good batting from St A's Mitchell, who passed 50 - kept Chilt at bay - and late wickets from Bob and Gentleman Stephen Hodgson were not enough to secure the win. A great day for cricket, a great pitch from Mr Gee and 13 points towards a respectable table position. West Sussex Invitation League Division 7 Table
Sunday 23rd
B-D, the 16's hearthrob, was back in action at the Rec and took man-of-the-match award
The 16s WON at home to Broadbridge Heath by eight wickets. BBH 90 a/o (Bowen-Davies 4-8, T.Glover 4-9), WC&T 94-2 (Wyatt 35 RET, Bowen-Davies 30 RET) Scorecard. A lethal bowling performance by the 16s backed up some powerful hitting finally saw them pick up their first win of the season in the Under 16s IDL League. Bowen-Davies & T.Glover bowled eight overs between them, four maidens, four wickets apiece for seventeen runs! A stunning catch by Jamie Curtis was apparently the highlight of a sharp fielding display and coach Fingers sounded much more upbeat after two disappointing losses. Wyatt then wallopped 35 - hitting a six on 29 so he could retire on the highest score possible - and David B-D repeated his bowling heroics with the bat retiring on exactly 30. We are now seventh out of ten in the IDL U16s League
The 12s visited Lindfield and LOST to their Under 11s. LIND 115-8 (Lee 3-5), WC&T 97-7 (Miller 25 RET, MacGregor 20). Scorecard. A club best from Hugh MacGregor (20) and Ed Miller's 25 retired were the highlights in our vain run chase. The real issue had been the bowling where we'd leaked 30 extras including 22 wides - Lindfield conceded just 13 which for an Under 11s side is very good. Only George Lee bowled with any control for the Green & Gold returning the excellent figures of 4-1-5-3. The 12s table is here
In complete contrast to the previous weekends where the 1sts and 2nds have struggled and the Sunday side have been flying, the Sunday XI LOST their unbeaten record this weekend in the eight wicket defeat to the Arundel Grasshoppers. WC&T 194 (Denton 73, Llewellyn 62*), AG 195-2 (Armstrong 1-24, S.Miller 1-25). Scorecard.
Alex Holbrook became the 28th player to represent us on a Sunday this seaon in just the first month! His debut was competant - a boundary and some good work in the field. However despite a West Chilt career best from skipper Denton and the usual knock from the Welshman, the NINE men of Arundel passed out total with ease. We had the usual fiery spell from the Aussie but few others could keep the pressure on and the number 3 (Littlehampton 2nds teenager) & 4 Grasshopper batsmen batted very sensibly. We didn't put down many chances but too many leg side deliveries (& too many byes from this correspondent keeping for the first time this season)! A lot of bowlers tried hard though today in the heat (Stu Miller, Aftanas, Budgen, Denton, Martin) and we'll all look much healthy tomorrow even if a little sore... Special thanks to Scotty Pulling for the mid session drinks. The Grasshoppers certainly looked to be a notch above the sides we've played this season and were also unbeaten before today. However the Fleet Street Strollers come to town in three weeks so we need to shape up a bit. Albourne & Sayers Common are the visitors next weekend as we enjoy a run of home games.
