Stunning Week 5

(May 17, 2010)
OneClub News

Our season came alive at last in mid May.

Thursday 13th May

The Under 9s WON at home to Pulborough.  Great win against the big neghbours.  We're second after our first game and only one point behind leaders Slinfold having played a game less.

A near perfect Saturday 15th May

Easily the best day of the 2010 season so far

The Under 10s WON at home to Three Bridges in the Identilam League South by 63 runs.  Scorecard and 3B Report hereWe're now fourth out of the nine teams in the Southern Division.

The Under 13s TIED with Lindfield Under 14s in the Identilam U14s League South.  LIND 89-5 (Tanner 2-6, Monaghan 2-27), WC&T 89-8 (Wes Scott 25*)  Scorecard
Remember we're playing a year up against a very strong colts club. Result of the season so far?  Quite possibly.  Report from proud coach Iain:

"Chilt U13's travelled to Lindfield to play their U14 A side.  The conditions were stunning and after losing the toss, an equally stunning performance followed in the field by Chilt.  Very tidy bowling by Gabriel Peck & a fantastic spell by Louis Tanner (2 for 5 off 3 Overs!).  James Monaghan predictably picking up a couple of wickets.  Without exception, Chilt fielded superbly with a large number of outstanding stops & numerous boundaries turned into singles at best; Wes Scott almost swallowing the catch of the season! A special mention to Tom Bryant who lets nothing past him!  Lindfield batted well, but were restricted to 89 for 5 off their 20 overs.

Chilt started their innings in a bouyant mood, with Gabriel hitting 10 runs of the first over! Sam Bartlett (keen to have some of the action!) was 'unfortunately' run out in the second over. Wes Scott & Reece C-P each played a very mature innings with Wes retiring on 25.  With the run rate a touch on the slow side, James Monaghan & Ollie Salkeld showed the bowlers little respect, both opening their accounts with a succession of fours!  With 18 required of the last three overs & eventually 5 required off the last ball, Louis Tanner struck a well timed pull through mid wicket (into the village fair) for four & we tied the match !

A great performance, but frustrating to miss out on a well deserved win by just one run.  Still 10 points gained & we are in the top half of the table".

The Under 14s WON away at East Grinstead in the Identilam U14s League North.
EG 72 a/o (Glover 4-3), WC&T 76-4 (Glover 29*).  Scorecard and mini EG report here.

Glover retires

The 14s won their second game of the season.  Two out of two and only the Sunday side in the non pairs game are also still unbeaten.  After last weekend's success at Lindfield, this was a notch up as today's opponents were East Grinstead.  The hosts were mainly U13s but had a couple of 14s.  Their top order was largely blown away by our off spinner after being asked to bat by captain Hasler.  Only a 24 run last minute partnership got Grinstead over 70 and gave them something to bowl at.  Our man-of-the-match Toby Glover bowled beautifully and fully deserved his four wickets for three runs which included a double-wicket maiden.  A good choice from coach Goring to get him to open the bowling as their top order were not used to spin.  Most people chipped in with wickets although Curtis was expensive and the captain was strangely off colour.  If we're being picky again, 19 wides / no balls is unacceptable but we held most catches and the fielding was keen.

When we replied, Chilt batted sensibly and steadily.  Pinch hitting at the top of the order, Jamie Curtis (13) eventually letting go with three boundaries before perishing and Ollie Tavares (6) following him soon after.  Hasler (7) hit one four before lofting the ball to deep backward square and getting caught again.  Crouch (4) promoted up the order hung around stubbornly before again getting caught.  The star of the show was once again Glover (29*).  If his bowling was near perfect as he varied his flight and pace, the batting wasn't flawless as he followed his team mates by hitting too many balls in the air.  However the luck was with him today when it wasn't last week and he paced the innings well.  He retired with a big six over mid wicket - no mean feat on this St Lucian sized school ground.  The hosts who bowled too many four balls knew the game was up as we had wickets in hand.  It was left to our new "Mr Dependable" Harman (1) and Boom Boom Afridi Staples (9) to see us home with nearly four overs to spare.

At the time of writing , we are fifth out of twelve in the Northern Division having played at least a game less than most.
Sunday 16th May

The Under 12s WON at home against Horsham Trinity.  HT 53-7 (Wes Scott 4-10), WC&T 57-0 (6.3 overs; Wes Scott 27*)

Report from Windy: "Man of the match Wes Scott (4-10 & 27 ret) helped to secure a well deserved first win of the season for the U12s against Horsham Trinity B (effectively their U11s).  Trinity won the toss and elected to bat on a slightly overcast morning and this proved to be in our favour as they struggled to 53-7 off 20 overs. In addition to Wes, special mention should go to captain Tom Good (2-3) and Zac Cisotti (1-7). As a whole the team fielded with energy and concentration putting into practice everything we have been doing at training over the past few weeks. In reply we made quick work in knocking off the 54 runs needed for victory; Wes and Bailey Crouch (6 no) once again proved to be a very solid opening partnertship and Eddy Miller came in at the end to hit the winning runs in the 7th over. The whole team can be extremely proud of themselves. Every player is beginning to understand their role and showed why this will be the first of many victories this season!".

Sam Aviss (right) was back with 16 useful runs in the 16s defeat at Pulborough

The Under 16s LOST away at Pulborough.  WC&T 96 a/o (J.Glover 30, Aviss 16, Wyatt 16), PULB 99-2.  Scorecard

The major disappointment of the weekend was the second successive defeat for Glover's men - this time at local rivals, Boro.  Only Jack Glover (30), Wyatt (16) and the returning Sam Aviss (16) made any significant scores as we posted a meagre 96 all out in under our allocation of 25 overs.  Boro got them for just two wickets - a run out by Glynne-Jones / Ben Miller plus a wicket for Toby Glover.  To rub salt into wounds Tom Nairn opened for Boro and retired after dropping a catch earlier.  Martin's men are sixth out of ten.

Will Chambers Neil 2
William and Neil
1st XI WON their first game of the season at home in a friendly to Hurstpierpoint.
WC&T 329-2 (40 overs; Chambers 115*, Miller 105*), Hurst 153. Scorecard

The 1sts win at last.  An undefeated debut ton from Will Chambers and also an undefeated ton from the Chairman Miller as he rolled back the years.  We posted 300 plus for just two wickets whilst Hurst could only manage 150 odd in reply.

The Sunday XI WON against new opponents Headliners at Cuckfield.  The hosts were bowled out for just 80 at the top pitch at Cuckfield and we got them quickly. Scorecard
