Green & Gold Legend #5 - Greg Brown

(January 06, 2010)
Greg Brown

Our first English batsman thus far – TK & Rupes both being bowlers - Greg was another gentleman of the game who came to the Club like so many of us later in life than we should.  He found the club courtesy of his brother-in-law, Steve “Ratta” Tuhey (who has also disappeared), and discovered he had the temperament and eye to build an innings usually as an opener and occasionally lower down the order.  He supplemented this with extremely useful keeping to the usual rubbish which used to get thrown down on a Sunday and also for the 1st XI.  In fact Greg played for the 1sts but never quite made it by his own admission and also was not keen on the “mean streak” that seemed to be required in league cricket.  Far happier when back playing on Sundays which he did so successfully for so long.  The original Mr Nice Guy at West Chilt.

At the end of 2009, Greg was still the only batsman at the Club to have made a ton in a midweek game when he made 102 in the draw with Nazeing in 2006.  In his last season for the club in 2007, he took nine catches – six of them behind the stumps.  Only Under 12 Ben Hasler took more that year.  When he came to the Club, he had played little cricket but being a good listener and an avid watcher, he picked things up quickly thanks to his great composure out in the middle.

Greg disappeared at the end of 2007 mainly because his beloved wife Rosie had stopped riding horses when he used to play cricket.  His own mentoring & human resources business had also taken off leaving him no time to dedicate to his second favourite sport (after football).  When this correspondent went to lunch with him to see where he'd disappeared to, Greg spent more time on the phone than talking to him!  This would be a strain for Greg as he's a real people person and doesn't like letting people down.

As a lad, Greg played for many years at Chichester City and like Scotty Pulling, supports some team called Pompey.  If you’re ever over Loxwood way and need some accommodation, you could do a lot worse than spend the night at Greg and Rosie’s B&B – a link is in the bottom of the right hand margin of the home page.  An understated guy & an old mate.

Awarded legend status for his years of good service to all WC&T sides.
