Colts Review 2009 - Under 9s/10s/11s

(November 18, 2009)

Under 9s – Coached by Crispin “Captain” Scott

W3 L6. (2008: W5 L3).  League Position: 6th (out of 9) (2008: 3rd out of 8).  The 9s won three of their nine friendly “soft ball” pairs cricket matches this season under the watchful eye of Captain Scott.  The highest score came from Capt Burroughs’s son, Matt Burroughs, who got 24 runs in one match – actually only two matches had recorded scores so the others may have done better but we’ll never know!

Two Northern Knights at U10 in 2010: Zac Cisotti & Reuben Taylor.  Well done boys!

Under 10s – Coached by the Fitzgerald clan; captain: Patrick Cope

W8 D0 L1. (2008: W0 L6).  League Position 2nd (out of 10).  (2008: 7th out of 7)  When you get to Under 10s which is the last year of pair’s cricket, boys play with a hardball and in a league for the first time.  Malcolm Fitzgerald, our wily 1st XI spinner of many years, ran the team with his family assisting.  The 10s had an outstanding season beating all opponents (including our friends at Pulborough plus Steyning & Cuckfield) bar Lindfield in the last game.  As Cuckfield were also unbeaten, the winner takes all contest meant that we finished runners up in the league.  This was a fantastic achievement and the team contains some fine prospects for next season.  Top run scorer was George Lee with 101 runs at an average of 14.43 and a high score of 26 at Southwater.  Patrick Cope & Ed Miller achieved 55 runs each with Ed playing a game less than both George and Patrick.  George also took the bowling honours with 13 wickets at 43 runs including an amazing 6 for 3 at Barns Green which beat almost all figures by any other player at the club this season - only Big Al Reeves's 7-27 for the 2nd XI were better.  Zac Cisotti, a real player for the future, claimed nine victims playing a year up in his first season for us.

Two U11 2010 Northern Knights to add to our Sussex player, Ed Miller:  Alex Scott & George Lee.

Under 11s – Coach Mark “Sherpa” Aylward; captain: Wesley Scott

W6 D0 L12. (2008: W1 D2 L4) League Positions: Identilam: 5th (out of 7) (2008: Did Not Enter); West Area League (Shield): 4th (out of 4) (2008: Unknown).  Of all the age groups, there’s little doubt that Sherpa’s troops struggled more than most.  They played 18 games which is more than any other colts side this season and certainly by the end, there were some promising signs as they enjoyed a good festival.  The 11s lost more than they won which was rare for all colts & senior sides this year but every time you wrote them off, they bounced back.  In the Identilam league, they beat Cranleigh home & away and got their revenge in the away game at Pulborough after losing at home.  In the SJCF, they beat two big West Sussex sides’ colts teams – Midhurst and Chichester - meaning they won both their away games whilst being humbled at home.  A transitional year no doubt and several of Malcolm’s U10s assisted so they’re ready for next year.  Top batsmen were as follows:

Bailey takes the bowling award with a wicket every 16 balls and 11 wickets at 12.18.  He also played a couple of games with the 13s.

Wes Scott was our Sussex player in this age group again this year.  Wes played 29 games in 2009 compared to just four in 2008 so we certainly benefited from his services far more this year.  He also played a game for the adult Sunday side as well as games for the Under 13s and one game for the 14s.
