2nd XI 2009 Season Review

(October 28, 2009)

Martin Glover Alan Reeves Rob Llewellyn

W11 D3 L2  (2008: W3 D5 L8)  (2007: W0 D4 L10) The most improved team at the cricket club.  Whilst the 1sts was again a tale of what might have been, the 2nds showed the way this year.  Bolstered by an Australian and some impressive colts every week, they nevertheless took their time to get going.

The 2nd XI has been running for only three years and their rise has been phenomenal.  The previous chairman Mr Hardisty was the one member of the committee who said we cannot progress without a second team.  We certainly couldn't get into the old WSICL without one.  The team had a tough first year as expected but following a more stable season in 2008, really motored this year.  Much of the credit must go to the unassuming captain who bats himself at ten or eleven and rarely bowls to ensure the colts get a chance to shine.

Outstanding Colts
Callum Wyatt played eight games but faded a little after a fantastic 64 against Barns Green.  Charlie Reeves playing with his dad played in seven and averaged 16.5 with the bat.  Jack Glover played six games and Ben Miller, five.  On the bowling front, John Tolson only bowled 21 overs but managed an amazing 4-16 at Worthing and Jack Glover also got through 20 overs

We were defeated in the first game at Clymping by five wickets and at home to eventual champions Belgrave Adelaide at the beginning of June.  However following that game, we remained unbeaten for the rest of the season (even in friendlies) - winning eight and drawing one with two games being victims of the weather.  The most impressive win was at the champions where the home side were destroyed – 133 all out - led by best ever figures from Mr Kosh – 15-2-52-6.  The big man was also there at the end with his captain to ensure we didn’t blow it, getting the runs for seven wickets.  Reevser had another good season with the ball claiming the best figures for the Club by any senior or colts side - 7-27 against Ifield 4ths

In the runs department, Reevser had hit most of the runs last year but this year he let others do the work as can be seen below.  The team was again bolstered by the Welshman who spent much of the season playing in this side and will no doubt continue to do next season.  There may be other 1st XI players who will start to struggle as the years go by and will expect a tap on the shoulder and told to play 2s.  Without this extra expertise and the developing colts, the 2nds may struggle next year against better opposition.   Assuming Mick will be playing exclusively for the 1sts, this could leave captain Fingers relying heavily on Bob and Reevser.

However all of this is for tomorrow.  Looking at the win stats for this year vs. the year before, you can see how the side was strengthened by the inclusion of an overseas player and having Bob for most of the season!  Let's raise a glass to our promoted 2nd XI!

In 2010 the 2nds are in Division 7 facing the likes of Wisborough Green 2nds & St Andrews 2nds as well as Littlehampton 3rds & Middleton 3rds.  Unless we run a third side on a Saturday next year which is extremely unlikely, this will be the side which continues to blood the ever improving colts.
