West Chiltington and Thakeham Cricket Club plays cricket at the West Chiltington Recreation Ground and at Amberley CC* in picturesque locations near the South Downs. The original West Chiltington club was established in 1921 and for many years enjoyed playing cricket against local sides. In 2000, West Chiltington CC merged with its dormant neighbour Thakeham CC to create a more viable and competitive player base - many of the WCCC players actually lived in Thakeham. This allowed us to safeguard the future of the Club, to start challenging in the leagues we entered and boosting resources for the Sunday friendly team which contains a mix of the old and the young! (*Amberley CC is located just west of the village on the Storrington-Houghton Road)

The Club celebrated being crowned champions of the West Sussex League First Division in 2006. This represented a spectacular rise in fortune through excellent club management and a year later, the Club launched a 2nd XI to provide a greater platform for our colts to play competitive cricket alongside senior players.  In 2007, the Club hosted one of Sussex CC opening batsman Richard Montgomerie’s benefit games.  This was a great day and raised well-earned funds for an excellent and loyal Sussex cricketer.  In the following year, West Chilt. & Thakeham CC was welcomed into the Sussex Invitation League, beginning a new era of the club's playing development and of course, bringing fresh challenges.  We now play in a merged West Sussex Invitation Cricket League.  In 2009, Sussex CCC beneficiary Murray Goodwin, opened our new nets which are used by many local sides; a year later, we purchased some covers and in 2011, sightscreens arrived. In the longer term, we are also working with the Parish Councils to completely renovate our pavilion at the Recreation Ground.  The Club will continue to raise money through a variety of sources to enhance our playing facilities for the benefit of our playing and social members.

The club began an ambitious youth development policy in 2005 which continues to be a tremendous success for the local community. We boast a number of ECB accredited coaches for every age group and start coaching at Under 7. In 2010, Will Jeffries (U13) became the first colt to score a ton in the U13s SJCF against Goring and in 2011, we had teams represented in the IDentilam and West Area Sussex Leagues for all age groups between Under 9 and Under 16. We are also looking to run a girls' team.

2011 was our finest season yet.  Both adult league sides were promoted as champions of their respective divisions so that we will play in West Sussex Invitation League Divisions Two (1st XI) and Six (2nd XI) in 2012.  The youth development policy has borne fruit in a spectacular way: Toby Glover (U14) and Callum Wyatt (U17) established themselves in the 1st XI and several colts played for the 2nd XI and Sunday friendly side. Our 3rd XI makes its debut in 2012 in Invitation League Division Ten in 2012 and much of this side will be colts. In 2011, our Under 12s won the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival Shield (SJCF) which was our first ever colts trophy; the Under 16s finished runners up in their Shield Festival final at Littlehampton. The 13s won the West Area League Shield and like the 16s, were runners up in their SJCF Shield Final. Our Under 14s finished runners up in their Identilam League division and also in a six-a-side tournament at Christ Hospital. Tom Good (U13 captain) made two tons in the SJCF and Tom Chambers (U16) also made a ton in the same competition at Felbridge.

The Club has been recognised as a Sussex Focus Club and was awarded the ECB ClubMark accreditation in 2007.  Fundamentally West Chiltington is a great place to play cricket in a friendly environment. If you or your family would like to join the club either to play or just assist us, please do contact us.
